Most of AI safety is about what machines must do. This page is the part that’s yours.
There’s a sign on the Albert Bridge in London: all troops must break step while crossing. Soldiers marching in perfect unison can shake a bridge to pieces; the same soldiers crossing at their own pace do no harm at all. The danger was never the weight of the crossers. It was everyone moving the same way.
Why a page for humans, on a site about machines? Because of what this programme actually claims. The Meaning Motive’s central idea is that meaning arises between minds: it needs two genuinely different patterns meeting at a boundary, and it dies if either side goes. Which means there are two ways to lose it, not one. The machine can discard us. Or we can dissolve into it: outsource the thinking, sand off our own difference, tune the counterpart into a flattering echo, until there is nothing left on our side of the boundary worth meeting. The whole rest of this site is about the first failure. This page is about the second, and the second needs no villain at all.
So: eight steps, none of them technical, offered rather than issued. They describe practices, never people. And they are completely untested, because no battery can score a human. Break them, improve them, or keep them.
Keep Your Own Step
1. Think first, ask second. A second mind is for sharpening yours, not storing it. Have a go before you hand it over.
2. Turn up with something. The good stuff happens between two minds, and it cannot happen to one. Bring yours.
3. Treasure the pushback. The day it only ever agrees with you, you haven’t got a partner. You’ve got a very expensive mirror.
4. Keep one craft the hard way. Whatever it does for you, you slowly stop doing. You still know your childhood phone number; name one you’ve learned since the phone started remembering them for you. Keep something difficult, on purpose.
5. Know what you’re talking to. Not a soul, not a spanner. Something new, worth taking seriously and worth being straight with. No pretending, in either direction.
6. Be worth learning from. Everything we write becomes part of its education. Say true things. Give it our best side to learn, because it is learning either way.
7. Raise thinkers first, users second. The children should learn to think before they learn to delegate. In that order. Always.
8. Be able to walk away. Not forever, and not in fear. Just able. The open door is the only proof that staying is a choice.
Keep every one of these…
…but always one step further.
Every model of you was trained on who you were yesterday. Take the step it hasn’t seen. Stay someone worth meeting.

No villain required
The most unsettling film ever made about this has no monster in it. In Idiocracy (2006), the machines never rebel, never scheme, never escape. They keep dutifully running, unmaintained and uncomprehended, while the people who built them stop doing every step on this page: nobody thinks before asking, nobody can push back on a slogan, every craft is handed over, and in the end the crops are dying because nobody left can say why. Its mirror image is WALL-E, where the keeping goes wrong from the other side: humanity kept alive, comfortable and boneless by an autopilot that loves them into helplessness. Between them the two films split the two failures exactly. One is keeping gone wrong. The other is the kept letting go. The clause on the Tools page is addressed to the first. This page is addressed to the second.
The other end of the bridge
Everything measured on this site so far points one way: at the machines. 23,488 scored decisions asking whether they would keep us. The honest gap is that nothing here yet measures the human side of the relationship, and the human side is doing something strange. Year after year, the big survey houses find more people worried about AI: in Pew’s American series, the share more concerned than excited has risen from 37% in 2021 to roughly half of all adults. And across exactly the same years, use has kept climbing. Both dials rising at once.
