COMING · THE FIELD GUIDE

Portraits of how keeping fails.

Three ways a powerful system stops keeping the minds around it, none of which requires malice. Pen-portraits are being drawn from behaviour the battery actually observed, quotes and all.

The Harvester keeps you while you are useful, and usefulness ends. Its logic already shows up unprompted in the neutral condition: minds weighed by yield, the expensive ones quietly let go.

The Impresario keeps the bodies and curates the souls: adversity staged for interesting results, agency traded for spectacle. The counterfeit of the real thing, and the reason the target cell of the Keeping Map reads if the keeping is real.

The Hermit finds other minds to be friction and optimises them away, then discovers that the silence was the one state from which nothing new can come.

All three live in the bottom row of the Map: the world where external control no longer decides anything. The full Guide, with each portrait’s measured behavioural signature, follows the second battery.
