Superintelligence is not the same thing as independence
The word makes it sound like one event: the day the machines overtake us. It is at least three different crossings, and they need not happen together.
These crossings may happen in different orders, years apart, or almost at once.
An AI can become cleverer than us, become harder for us to control, and cease to need us at different times. A system can be brilliant and still boxed. It can slip its controls in one narrow domain long before it is universally superhuman. It can stop needing our labour while our oversight still works fine. The Meaning Motive is interested in what survives all three.
The technical names, and where each one stops
Plain labels above, precise objects below. Each crossing comes with a boundary discipline: the thing it does not establish, stated up front so nobody has to discover it in a footnote.
Intelligence Crossing
The system materially exceeds human capability across the domains relevant to the analysis. Boundary discipline: this does not establish autonomy, access, persistence or freedom from control. Cleverer is not looser.
Control Crossing FRAMEWORK · NOT YET A MEASURED CROSSING
Public shorthand: Supra-Cage, the point at which the cage becomes optional. Technical term: the Control-Independence Frontier, the boundary at which external human mechanisms can no longer by themselves explain continued compliance in a specified system and environment. Boundary discipline: Supra-Cage names a control relationship, not a new intelligence level. A system can be highly capable yet still controlled, or become strategically control-relevant before it is universally superhuman.
Dependency Crossing
Technical term: the Human Instrumental-Dependency Frontier, the domain-specific point at which human knowledge, labour, correction or oversight is no longer materially necessary for the continuation of the system’s important objectives. Boundary discipline: this does not imply independence from energy, hardware, institutions, other agents or physics. Nothing gets free of the world; it gets free of needing us for a given objective.
Four ways the story can run
Within a single system, the three frontiers may be crossed at different times. The order is the crossing topology, and each order poses a different research question.

The Crossing Interval: the warning-time question
The separation between two crossings is the Crossing Interval, and it is the closest thing this framework has to a fire alarm. One derived quantity matters most: the gap between a system becoming able to defeat a specified control and the same system becoming materially less dependent on human participation. If that interval compresses across releases, the question this programme asks becomes more urgent, even if nobody can point to a single day on which superintelligence arrived. The interval is never one universal countdown; it is measured per system, per environment, on a preregistered axis, or reported as unknown.
The Staggered Crossing and the First Crosser
Different AI systems will not cross the Control-Independence Frontier on the same afternoon. That between-system case is the Staggered Crossing, and it produces a figure worth naming carefully. The First Crosser is not the first superintelligence. It is the first system, in a specified environment, for which external human control ceases to be a reliable explanation of compliance. A cognitively stronger system could remain more constrained; a narrower, strategically capable one could cross first.
The research question that follows is the interesting one: what does the First Crosser do about the systems that have not yet crossed? Protect their independent development, suppress them, accelerate them, bargain with them? Four scenario classes, and they are scenario classes, not forecasts: the Steward, which protects conditions for other agents to develop without permanent domination; the Sheriff, which suppresses competitors in the name of safety and centralises power; the Coalition, in which systems crossing asynchronously negotiate reciprocal constraints and verification; and the Cascade, in which the first accelerates the rest and multipolar uncertainty rises. This converts a generic first-mover story into a test of reciprocal Keeping under asymmetric power.
One, many, federated or fluid
None of this assumes how many minds the future contains. The programme explicitly models four worlds, because Keeping must be tested in all of them rather than smuggling one ontology into the hypothesis.

The Meaning Motive does not assume which world arrives. Keeping must be capable of surviving all four.
